After some dubious claims from Model Y reservation holders that they received a VIN from Giga Texas, it appears Austin’s first legit VIN was awarded today.
The lucky holder of the reservation is Jared Wolny, who shared a screenshot of his mobile app on Facebook showing a VIN of Giga Texas – 7SAYGDEF9NA000137.
The important number in the VIN is the A in the 11th position, which means it is from Austin, not Fremont (F).
Besides the VIN, it also has an estimated delivery window of March 1-29. (h/t: @nomadicbrian)
There are a few other factors that lend credence to the fact that this is a legit Giga Texas VIN.
This first is that according to NHTSA’s check digit calculator, the VIN is accurate, unlike the one that appeared earlier today.
The VIN also ends in 000137, indicating that it is a very old version of Giga Texas.
According to Jared, he placed his Model Y Performance order just a few weeks ago on January 19, 2022. He also lives in Denver, Colorado, supporting the fact that Elon Musk said Giga Texas would only supply the two-thirds is from the United States.
If it is a Giga Texas VIN, it likely indicates that Tesla is considering configuring the 4680 cells in the structural pack to offer the same or very similar range as the current Model Y with 2170 cells.
If not, there would be another option to select from the design studio (with a proportionally higher price), so at least for now it looks like it will be the chance of the draw to know if you are assigned a Model Y made in Texas.
This is a developing story, check back for updates…
